Auckland Maori Tours Marae Experiences
A truly unique experience for your group – enjoy life on an authentic Maori Marae for a very special Overnight or Full Day Experience. All food, drinks and cultural activities are included!
Visit a real Marae (Maori meeting house) in the Auckland or Northland region, the region in New Zealand where your guide Ceillhe spent her childhood. The iwi (tribal family) also benefits from your visit because it is our opportunity to give back to our local community. Your awesome Interactive Maori Culture Experience includes: - Visit a real Maori community Marae set in a stunning location
- Experience a very traditional Maori welcome ceremony (powhiri) and the famous process of Hongi (nose pressing)
- Learn about Maori customs and traditions (tikanga) & even go home knowing some basic Maori language (te reo Maori)!
- Learning a basic Maori greeting (mihi) & develop a basic family tree/genealogy (whakapapa/pepeha) in a Maori speech
- The history of the Marae, Maori and the Treaty of Waitangi during our cultural walks at the Marae
- Learn some Waiata (Maori songs)
- Learn how to prepare a hangi (earth oven meal) - in fact we will prepare the meal together, take you through the process of cooking the food, "lift" the hangi from the REAL earth oven and enjoy a fantastic meal together. This is always one of the major highlights during our Marae stays in the Auckland region.
- Learn about the Haka (famous war dance used by the All Blacks Rugby team!)
- Have a go at Flax (harakeke) weaving and/or wood carving (whakairo)
- Hear Maori Myths and Legends told by the local Tangata Whenua (people of the land)
- One night sleepover in a sacred traditional meeting house. If requested we can also provide separate accommodation at extra cost but we thoroughly recommend sleeping at the Marae to enjoy the complete experience.
- Great food (kai) is provided from the time the manuhiri (visitors) arrive at the Marae on day 1 through to their departure on day 2. We also provide snacks and drinks throughout your time with us, so nobody ever goes hungry!
- Complimentary pick-up and drop-off at/from Auckland City or your inner-city accommodation. Pick-up approx 9am Saturday morning and drop-off approx 5pm Sunday evening.
All expenses are included in the price of this tour and there is no need to spend any more money during your entire stay with us - that's our guarantee!
